There are many reasons for
starting a wine cellar -
investment, hobby or mere
convenience - certainly a well
stocked cellar provides for the
right wine at the right time.
Whatever one's specific
reason for starting and
maintaining a wine cellar
elements of fun and economics
will feature.
Firstly, it can and should be
fun. Fun to taste, choose and
collect from the myriad of wines
available from all over the
world, fun to analyze the wine
as it matures, to savour its
complexities and to share the
magic with family and friends.
Secondly, it is generally
always cheaper to purchase young
wines than matured wines, if
they are in fact available.
Having said this, it is true
that most of the world’s wines
are meant to be consumed before
the next vintage whilst the
wines still possess their youth
and freshness. Equally though,
it can be said that all wines
will benefit from some time
resting in the bottle - mature
wines offer flavours and aromas
that are simply not found in
young wines.
So, through an economic
perspective, a wine cellar
affords the opportunity to buy
wines when they are young,
readily available and generally
at their cheapest, to store it
to maturity and then to gain the
maximum benefit from the wine.
There is also then an option
to sell some of the mature wines
at premium prices thereby
providing funds to purchase more
wines!
